This is not a simple play. To start with, it's a serious drama about a boy searching for his lost horse which he follows across the battlefields of World War I. Secondly, the horses who are characters in themselves, are all done with large, semi machine-like puppets that wonderfully capture the spirit of horse-ness at various ages and situations. Add to that the actors ARE the puppeteers, and you end up with a technical tour de force!
I've read the book, and while it was moving, I found the idea of it being acted out on stage to be compelling. The very fact that it was produced to be on Broadway shows me something as to the caliber of the story. There is a movie due to be released soon, but I don't think it will have the same character as the play. Real animals won't be able to capture the magic of the performance.
Discount War Horse tickets are still available at very reasonable prices. I strongly urge you to take the time to see this on the stage. It's playing at the Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theatre. You won't regret it.
Another show with really fantastic staging is The Lion King, believe it or not. Cheap Lion King tickets are available almost all the time. This is one of the longest running shows on Broadway, and has been seen world-wide.
